David McInerney - Co-Founder and Chief Food Adventurer, FreshDirect

To say David McInerney is obsessed with food is an understatement. Just ask the hundreds of farmers, ranchers, and fishermen he considers close friends, the team of fresh food sourcing experts he works with every day, and the thousands of diners he’s cooked for at top restaurants around the world.

David’s first 15 years in food were as a chef alongside top restaurateurs, including the late Bernard Loiseau in Burgundy, and David Bouley in New York. But the last 15 years, according to David, have been the most interesting. As co-founder and “Chief Food Adventurer” for FreshDirect he is charged with sourcing the best-tasting, freshest, and highest-quality foods from around the world. 

But it’s not as simple as filling out a purchase order. David and his team spend more than half the year travelling around the globe to learn, investigate, explore, and, of course, taste fresh food. In David’s view, understanding what we’re eating and who is growing it are the most important, yet most forgotten, details when it comes to what we put in our bodies. And David’s passion and curiosity are boundless.

Through his food sourcing travels – both domestic and international – David has developed deep relationships with what he calls the “Dream Team” of food producers along the way: the best of the best cattle ranchers, lamb ranchers, turkey growers, chicken growers, swordfish and salmon fishermen, oystermen, berry growers, citrus growers, melon growers, squash growers, peach growers, apricot growers, cherry growers, olive oil producers, and more. His dream? A dinner party with all of them.  

As David sets out on his next sourcing mission, he’s looking forward to meeting more food producers that go above and beyond to grow and care for their food. Because he knows that food grown with respect just tastes better.
